Our Curriculum & Instructional Approach

At Journey to Learning Tutoring, we provide a structured, research-based curriculum designed to support students in reading, writing, mathematics, and enrichment.

Our goal is to ensure every learner receives personalized instruction that builds skill, confidence, and long-term academic success.

Reading & Writing Instruction

We use the Wilson Fundations® curriculum—also implemented in Minnetonka Schools for grades K–3—to develop strong foundational literacy skills. This multisensory program integrates:

  • Phonics

  • High-frequency (“trick”) words

  • Sight-word recall

  • Handwriting and spelling

  • Vocabulary and comprehension strategies

To support fluency and understanding, we supplement instruction with grade-level reading passages and engaging texts. Students participate in hands-on, tactile learning activities such as magnetic letter boards, sand spelling, shaving-cream writing, and movement-based games. Our licensed teachers create a fun, flexible learning environment that keeps young readers motivated and confident.

Math Instruction

Our math curriculum blends Everyday Math (used in Minnetonka Schools) with Singapore Math methodologies. This approach strengthens conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and multiple solution strategies. Students learn through:

  • Visual and hands-on models

  • Math manipulatives

  • Homework support

  • Step-by-step guided practice

  • Multiple methods for solving problems

We align instruction with grade-level Minnesota academic standards to ensure students are prepared for school expectations and statewide assessments. Lessons incorporate games, visuals, technology, and movement to match each child’s learning style.

Enrichment Programs

We offer enrichment opportunities in:

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Math

  • Science

  • Social Studies

  • Test Preparation

After completing an initial assessment, each student receives an individualized learning plan tailored to their skills, interests, and goals. Lessons are designed to challenge, extend, and deepen students’ academic abilities.
